Teesside BSL – 16 April 2023

The start of the season was delayed to this date as the Pontefract charity race was inadvertently publicised for the scheduled BSL date in March. As Pontefract are regular supporters of the the BSL & in view of the good cause the change was made to the BSL.

With the regular BSL racers who normally also attend the Nationals still turning up at Teesside it was surprising that only 12 racers appeared in total. The big positive though was 6 of these were Clubman racers including Newcomers to the series Rhodri Davies & Adrian Blakey. This could have been much better as 4 new racers who had planned to attend opted not to as the Genesis chassis they had ordered some weeks ago were not received in time for this meeting – they do plan to attend other rounds though. It was also very good to see a former team champion, Mark Croston making a welcome return after 15 years away.

Qualifying in1/32nd racing proved incredibly close in the middle order with 4th – 7th places being within a lap of each other, Lee Robson being the unlucky one to not make the cut for the A Final. Richy Kettleson TQ’D by just over ½ lap from Shep & then went on to comfortably win the A Final from Shep while Pete Clarkson succeeded in a race long battle to run down Jim Algar for 3rd in the dying seconds. This still gave Jim the top Clubman honours though. In the B Final Mike Kettleson, racing on the favoured red lane, improved on heat pace to take the win from Lee by nearly a lap.

Father & son, Mike & Richy as Lucky 7 dominated the 1/24th team race from start to finish to take the win from Team 131 (Pete Clarkson & Paul Shepherd)  by 89 laps. A further 62 laps down were Fylde 1 (Steve Sargent & Adrian Blakey) with Adrian finding some decent pace as he dialled more into the track. TSCC Plus (Peter Donely & Mike Ogden)  ran in 4th with motor that lacked the pace to make any challenge. Unfortunately One In The Chamber (Mark Croston & Rhodri Davies) & Stealth (Lee Robson & Jim Algar) had to spend some time in the pits & finished 5th & 6th respectively.

Thanks to the Teesside club with grateful assistance from Peter Donely for putting on a thoroughly enjoyable day’s racing.

We look forward to seeing plenty racers at the end of May for the Scottish Tour with our 1st visit to the new Dumfries club as well as Dunfermline.
