17 August Oaklands Park
After the heady heights of 27 for Luton's round, a disappointing entry of just 10 racers made their way to a sunny Birmingham for round 7 of the Southern 32 championship.
Five visitors joined five home members for the usual format of 4 x 3min heats. Tony Mills set the first bench mark with 35.08 in heat 1 but was immediately upstaged by Steve Rhodes (35.16), Paul Harwood (35.40) and Barry Gilzean (35.52). Competition was strong throughout the whole field with good spirit which has always been a feature of Southern 32 races.
Home club chairman Mick Metcalfe found pace with the first 36+ time and this looked to be TQ until Paul made a determined effort in the very last heat to head thetable by 0.4 of a lap.
First up in the finals was the Clubman 'A' with all four racers coming from the home club, with Steve Rhodes taking a straightforward win.
On to the overall finals: first up in the 'C', Duncan lead Nigel. Both were experiencing their first events outside of club racing and were progressing every time on track.
The 'B' final was a very close affair. Graham Clarke took the win by a lap from Tony Mills but second, third and forth ended just 0.14 of a lap apart
The 'A' final bought the individual racing to a close. Paul led from the start to win by half a lap from Mick who was a further 0.3 ahead of Steve.
With the outside temperature rising, the team race got under way with 5 pairings. Only LSCC and DOT elected to use group 12 power which is clearly reflected in the results, both teams finishing well clear of third place. Despite DOT's very good pace, LSCC took advantage of having a home based driver and took the win by 34 laps after an hours racing. Reliability of all the cars was excellent although Team Bumpkin were hindered by a distinct lack of tyres in the latter stages.
A good days racing all in all but a few more attendees would have eased the pressure
of marshalling if you were not racing. Than you for everyone's co-
