The racing was divided into two classes, under and over 2 liters.
The rules allowed the big class minimum tyre diameters of 25mm rear and
24mm front, while the smaller class were allowed to be 2mm smaller.
The larger class had a 54mm maximum width while the under 2l cars were 3mm
smaller.
The racing was organised so that everybody had a 3 minute race on each lane, and the six scores were added to give the qualifying order. This was displayed on a real leader board with names moved up and down by hand - which worked very well and was perfectly in keeping with a retro event! Race control did use a modern computerised system, so we didn't have lap counting errors that (allegedly) might have occurred in early days of slot racing! The top 6 qualifiers from each class went into separate finals. In fact this turned out to be the top 12 overall, so the classes seemed pretty evenly matched, although the 2 quickest cars were in the under 2 litre class.

The under 2 liter final, David Farrow, Bill Charters, Nic Hirst, Dick Smith, Mark Rosten-Edwards and Chris Musto. and their cars, (David's Talbot on the left etc.
Mark and Dick were clearly quickest in this with and as the power went off at the end of the race Dick was several lengths ahead. Mark's car rolled more freely and that was enough to take the win by the time the cars came to rest
(Above) Chris Adams' ERA driven by Mark Rosten-Edwards, and Mark collects the trophy from Tony Condon The car has a Scale Auto SC-0022 FF red can 38k rpm motor, running 9:36 steel gears off an old BSCRA F1 car (Below) Dick's second place Thomas Special - fiber glass chassis and Scale Auto black motor geared 8:28
Over 2 liter Final
The over 2 liter final Steve Kempson, Bryan King, Steve Francis, John Secchi, Tony Condon and Derek Cooper. Looking at their faces, could it be Steve K and Bryan have had a coming together on the warm up lap? Their Napier Railton and Bentley are on the left of the start line picture.
Steve Francis led from the point John Secchi fell off, and Steve won by half a lap despite John's attempts to close the gap with some very sideways motoring. (below) Steve's winning car. The chassis brass plate under the rear 2/3 of the chassis is a 1.6mm thick rattle plate attached to the body. It has a Scale Auto 25k motor geared at .7:27
