The Hill     The Hill looking down

The test hill track was laid out on the historic Brooklands test hill and was open to all comers to bring their cars along and have a go.  The test hill has a progressively steeper gradient, and was used for testing full size cars.  In 1932 a Frazer Nash set a record of just under 7½ seconds, averaging over 32mph.

The start    The end

The drivers stood by the line at the bottom of the hill along with the starter/ time keeper power supply at the start line.  Obviously the driver at the bottom of the hill cannot see exactly when to slow down at the top, so a foam lined box was provided to give the car a safe end to the climb.  Manual timing was provided by means of the time keeper's stop watch.  When the car reached the box at the top of the hill, the flag marshal waved the chequered flag, so the time keeper knew when to stop the clock.
