The National Club Team Championship

updated July 2023

The National Club team Championship has been held every year from the first ECRA organised British National Slot Racing Championships in 1964. For the first five years the  Club Team championship was run a set of individual races for 4 drivers plus a reserve driving their own cars. The two teams each had 2 drivers racing in a series of sprint races with the result worked out on a points system - 3 points for a win, 2 for second, 1 for third. There were a series of knock out rounds, and just two teams in the final.

Ashton Racing - Club Champions 1964

The winners of that first event in 1964 were the Ashton team of Gerry Ball, Dave Lord, Brian Badger, Eric Johnson, and  Keith Edwards (reserve).

Thanks to Dave Lord who gave me this photo in August 2007.
Dave moved to Australia in 1965 and lost touch with his British slot racing friends.  He would be very interested in catching up with old friend - please contact me if you'd like any messages passed on.

In 1969 (The first year of an Association owned National track) this was replaced with an endurance race, with six teams of 5 drivers contesting the final. They all drove for an equal length of time, and drove the same car - although you could change to a reserve car if the first one broke. The winning team was the one which covered the greatest total distance. Initially there were eliminating heats held on neutral club tracks  prior to the National finals to reduce the number of teams to 6.  From 1972 on the semis and finals were all held on the same day, with the 2 one hour semi- finals to deciding the 6 teams for the final.  In 1976 the number of drivers per team was reduced to 4 and the length of the race was increased. (The table below shows the length of each year's final.)

Each of the main BSCRA 1/32 car classes (Sports/GT, Grand Prix and Saloon) was run once every 3 years up to 1984. Since 1985 the race has been for Sports/GT cars with Group 12 motors - in effect a saloon car  with a sports body.

The Nationals were held on an 8 lane track from 1994.  Semi finals were no longer held, teams were swapped round so that all the teams had an identical amount of track time on each lane. Where there were more than 8 entries,  teams sat out some segments (with their cars in the parc ferme),.

By far the most successful club has been the North London Society of Model Engineers with 25 wins.

Here's some photos of the original North London team taken in the early 1970s. In the group photo is (L to R) Dick Smith, Tony Condon, John Dominy, Gerry Fitsimmons (nearly hidden) and Ian Fisher. below are  Rob Dominy and Gerry Fitsimmons
