BRITISH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
The 1974 Nationals
The November 1974 edition of the ECRA Newsmag contained the Nationals report. In this period the Newsmags were produced by Lionel Garratt using an ancient duplicating machine which inevitably didn’t produce the finest print quality.
Ian Jensen’s drawing of Mick Burnham’s winning F1 is reproduced below. It has the very unusual feature of the motor offset from the centre line but otherwise was fairly conventional for the period. Apparently Mick and his friends came up with the offset motor idea but couldn’t decide if offsetting it to the left or right would be best. They built and tested both left and right handed chassis before settling on what worked best that day, quite possibly because that one had a slighty better motor. After that they decided the offsetting didn’t help and their later cars had the motor in the centre.
