Area 6 qualifying round 2, South Essex : 11 January 2015

The Area 6 tour before returning home in the later rounds continued in January, with a visit to the newly-established South Essex Slot Club in Shoeburyness.

Production

Local independent Terry Blackmore took an early lead as Pinewood round winner Cliff Bicknell blew his chances with a poor run on white. Richard Hills drew level in the second stint before pulling out a narrow advantage in the second half that Terry was not quite able to match.

Saloon

Paul Harwood dipped under the 5 second mark in qualifying with brother Mark on a 5.0. Five drivers hit a 5.1; Sam Thrower, Bob Hallums, Ian Fisher, Nick Thrower and Greg Harwood. Come the final, Nick and Ian built good lap scores in the B, indeed Ian’s 33.35 on green wasn’t matched by any A finalist. Paul Harwood looked untroubled in winning the A and overall. After three segments Mark Harwood and Sam Thrower were level on 93 laps; Mark just getting the verdict in the fourth. Their totals took them to third and fourth with Nick Thrower from the B slotting into a fine second overall.

Again Paul was the only driver in the 4.9s in quali, from bro’s Greg and Mark with Bob Hallums the best of the rest. Greg was Fast Bro in the segmented finals, form being followed as the A finalists finished first to fourth overall. Greg was followed by Paul, Mark and Bob.

Sports

Greg put the morning’s problems behind him running close to sub-4 in quali. His 4.006s lap may well be a South Essex record. Clubman grade driver Richard Hills raised the eyebrows of one or two by winding up his ex-Cleave, 16 year-old Radcovic to a 4.3. Richard missed bumping Bob Hallums out of the last A final berth by five hundredths of a second. Greg drove well clear of the A final field in a race which was otherwise very close. With one leg to go any of Bob, Mark or Paul could take second. With Bob twice losing a wheel the value of quick pitstops was shown as he got back on track to still finish 6th. Paul from Mark by less than a lap meant an all-Harwood podium. Ian Fisher rose from the C final for 4th. In the B, John Ovens hit form late in the day for 5th overall with Sam Thrower and Richard Hills scrapping for first Luton member home. Sam’s charge failed by just four parts of a lap.
