2025 Won O Won Sports/GT Championship May 5th
The fastest class was run on the Monday. It was encouraging to see 46 entries, we’ve
not had more since 2015.
The class allows a free choice of chassis and motor. Most
of the field raced brushless motors. There’s still an opportunity to race strap
motors at the brushed Nationals in July.
Mick Metcalfe completed a hat trick of best presented body awards this Jota livery on a Betta Ferrari 499P bodyshell.
The Sports/GT class has long been dominated by the BSP/CAT Audi R10 bodyshell. This year most of the entries used that shell, it’ll be different next year when the Audi is no longer eligible.
Will Stemman was top qualifier with a record 4.749 second lap. James Cleave and Martin
Ellis qualified 2-
The entries were seeded into 6 heats, two with 7 drivers and 8 in the top four groups.
Will
Stemman was fastest in the heats, his 277 lap total was 8 laps faster than last year’s
record. James Cleave, Chris Thomas and Martin Ellis also beat the 2024 record. Dave
Stevenson and Gordon Dickson were the top 2 in main grade, 10th and 11th overall
Main Grade Final
Gordon Dickson led the race, pulling out a lead of 5 laps from Dave Stevenson by half distance. Mick Metcalfe and Barry Gilzean were closely matched for 3rd. Dave was catching the leader in the final part of the race, but Gordon was still 2 laps ahead going into the final segment. Dave’s took the lead in the last minute, he went on to win by a lap and take his second Main grade title of the weekend. Gordon took second and Mick beat Barry for third. Woody was fifth followed by Bob Budge and top clubman Mark Steventon. Ben Tapp was delayed by an ecom failure, but once he was back he was among the quickest.

Overall final
James Cleave led from Josh Bryant and Will Stemman at quarter distance. Will started on purple and black, once on middle lanes he passed Josh and by the half way lane change led by one hundredth of a lap from James. In the second half of the race Will extended his lead to win by 4 laps from James with Josh 3rd a further 4 laps back. Greg Harwood took 4th having held that position for much of the race, he was followed by Richard Mack and Paul Harwood. Martin Ellis and Chris Thomas both had car problems early in the race, their time in the pits consigned them to 7th and 8th.
Will was some 18 laps quicker than last year’s record, the top 4 drivers were ahead of the 2024 winning time. This is a considerably greater improvement than the other 2 classes.
