The second 2020 round was at Bournemouth.  There were 15 entries, we know at least 3 more would have come were it not for storm Dennis.

In qualifying Will Stemman was fastest by some margin, two of his runs were over 35.90. Next up were the Hawk powered cars of Brian Saunders and Simon Francis with mid 34 lap runs.  Mark Hammond was the top clubman runner with a 32 lap run.  Stephen Mccann tried the Southern 32 for the first time and qualified for the clubman final.

In the Clubman final, Mark Hammond to won by 5 laps, Marc Lyons was second nearly two laps ahead of a closely contested 3rd place which eventually went to Alan Clark just ahead of Stephen Mccann. Ali Dent was filth, unfortunately missing out on a final outing.

The D final again saw Alan and Stephen in a close battle, this time Alan got the verdict by less than a tenth of a lap with Ali also on the lead lap in third.

The first 3 places in the C final were closely contested, less than half a lap covering the first 3.  Phil Hemsley - now a Bournemouth member following his move to Dorset - was the winner.

The B final produced another close finish with Steve Kearey and Stan Alton swapping the lead many times till Steve finally retook the lead with seconds to spare. Mark was third just over a lap down on the supers after Josh Bryant retired.

In the A final, Will Stemman resumed his winning ways to win by a clear lap ahead of Brian Saunders, Paul Harwood and Simon Francis - that trio constantly swapped places throughout the five minutes, eventually ending up covered by less than quarter of a lap.

In the team race there were 8 teams, although Phil Hemsley ran solo and the all premier Young Man team wasn’t eligible for points.

The Luton team had consistently quick runs to win by over 16 laps.   Second place was closely contested between “How Hard Can It Be” and GT.    The How Hard team with their group 12 powered car set the fastest segment of their day in their last run to overtake GT’s Hawk 7 powered car just a few minutes from the end.  First round points winners Harwood racing were in the mix for a top 3 place at half way, but weren’t as quick in the second half.  M&S came fifth, their Genesis seemed to be slowing as the race went on.  Netley and Phil had a close finish for sixth, Phil retaking the place in the final segment.  And then we come to series champions and first round winners Young Man, who withdrew their first car with gear trouble after one segment, discarding the 104 laps it had achieved. They set the fastest laps of the day in between gear changes on their second car.  Will reckons they got through about half a dozen gears, which must be something of a record.

We look forward to seeing you all at Millstream for the next round in 4 weeks time, and hope we can look forward to better weather!

Chris

Will and Brian finished 1-2 with these cars.  Both were 2019 Southern 32 champions in their classes.  Will’s car (left) has a new Super Wasp motor in his JK chassis, where as Brian’s Genesis had the same Hawk R that he used throughout his 2019 Masters winning campaign.
