Driver Rankings

BSCRA Driver Ranking - Explained

This ranking system was sparked into life after a comment from a newcomer to BSCRA who found the current grading system very complicated and didn't give a member an obvious progression through the sport. Many drivers get stuck in a particular grade and have no progression prospects. A ranking system that gives credit to the results of each member at all BSCRA events gives members the chance to progress up the rankings with improved results. The current grading system does not accurately reflect current form. The ranking list is designed to reflect a member's results over the last two racing years, after which, the ranking points earned start to slowly reduce. Members have to compete in new events to keep their ranking current.

The ranking system is not a replacement for the current BSCRA grading system; it is an indication of current performance of each and every member and a tool to enable newer members to see their own progression through the ranks as they compete in more events.

All BSCRA sanctioned events are taken into consideration. The 1/32 and 1/24 Nationals are the premier events and therefore carry the most ranking points. 1/32 and 1/24 British Open Championship events also carry a large number of ranking points. Events like the S32 and BSL carry the least ranking points as they are the first stage of racing outside of the local club. In a member's first year, they may decide to compete in the S32 or BSL. If they have enjoyed that, they may wish to compete in area rounds and attend the Nationals, or race in a couple of local BOC events and S32 or BSL again. In the third year, now they have some 'open class' cars, they may compete in the whole British Open Championship and even qualify for the Nationals in all classes. This progression through the sport is what members should be striving for. As a member competes in these events they will move up the ranking list. Only the last six results of each multi-round championship, count towards the ranking list. This means that if they compete in seven S32 events they will drop their first score, even if it was better than their last score. This keeps the ranking current, and encourages members to consider competing in other series.

The ranking list can also been used to seed qualifying and heats at BSCRA events. In the future, it may be a viable prospect to replace the current grading system. There may even be annual awards based on the ranking system. Here is a summary of how it works...

Ranking Events and how they score:

  • 1/32 and 1/24 Nationals - Each class scores individual ranking points (Only the last obtained result)
  • 1/32 and 1/24 BOC - The ranking points are awarded on the overall results of the meeting across all classes (The last six obtained results)
  • Production Challenge - Only the 1/32 Production event scores ranking points as the BSCRA do not guarantee to run the Formula 2 championship, it is 'time permitting' (Only the last obtained result)
  • National Club Team Championship - Each member of the team gets equal ranking points (eligible teams only, only the last obtained result)
  • 1/32 National Championship Qualifying Rounds (Area Championship) - The overall area championship positions carry ranking points, but only if there have been at least two rounds contested, using cars eligible for each BSCRA 1/32 class that will be contested at the 1/32 National Championships (Only the last obtained result)
  • S32 and BSL - Only the 1/32 Production class scores ranking points (The last six obtained results)
  • Falcon Pro – Only the F2 class scores ranking points (The last six obtained results)

Remember that each result only counts for two years from the date it was obtained. After which, the ranking points obtained will start to reduce each day. If a member wants to keep their ranking current, they have to continue to compete in BSCRA events. People competing in the S32, BSL and 1/24 BOC events are asked to become a member of BSCRA if they want to feature in the BSCRA ranking list and see their progression up the rankings.

Careful thought has been given to the 'weighting' of each event type to encourage members to compete in different BSCRA events and give a logical progression through the classes of racing.

Most of the places on the ranking list are very close. It would be quite easy for some members to improve their ranking by competing in more events. So get to as many events as you can and see your ranking improve.
