A healthy field of 24 racers turned out for the last round of this year’s BSL at Fylde before the Chas Keeling BSL Finals in December. No less than 6 racers were making their 1st BSL appearance on the track  which is always encouraging.

!/32nd Production Racing

Paul Shepherd had a point to prove as Martin Ellis has pushed him all the way this season for the title. Paul’s excellent looking new car took top spot by nearly a lap from the man having a great year, David Sargent with Martin a few feet behind while Steve Sargent took a last gap bottom spot for the A Final in the last heat just 1ft ahead of Gordon Dickson!

Promising Blackpool young driver Steven Pearce comfortably won the F Final while another 1st visitor to the venue, Mike Ogden won the E by over 2 laps.

Geoff Snaith easily won the D while Damon Rylands & Jade Slater battled out 2nd in the Final & top Novice spot which Damon claimed by just 26ft.

The C Final saw original track builder Norman Fawcett take a 1 lap win from local Dave Wood.

The B Final saw Gordon Dickson proving he should have made the A in winning by a comfortable 5 lap margin from 1st time visitor Richy Kettleson.

No doubt in the A Final. Shep led from the start to run out winner by well over a lap from Martin leaving the title to be decided at the Finals.

1/24th Team Racing

Little doubt in the 1/24th series as Martin has dominated with various partners & needed little more than to enter to win the title. With Richy Kettleson as his partner the Young Guns team were clear favourites to take another win. The real battle was between 5 very closely placed teams all hoping to take 2nd spot in the series.

Once the race started Young Guns for once did not have a bolistic car but were 2nd at the halfway mark, 3 laps up on BST (David Sargent & Pete Donely) and Team 131 (Pete Clarkson & Norman Fawcett). Fylde 1 Steve Sargent & Adam Gresswell led by 10 laps at this point but were considered by most out of the reckoning as a new junior stand-in driver in Adam who had not raced in the 1/32nd  event would be driving the last 2 segments.

Fylde 1’s 3rd segment delivered a massive shock even to the Fylde members who knew Adam could be quick on a clubnight. He was lapping within 0.08 of the track record & not knowing who he was racing next to started reeling Shep in. This was to teach him a racing lesson – overtaking National champions on the outside is not recommended! The subsequent car repair meant Fylde 1’s lead was cut down to 5 laps ahead of both Team 131 & Young Guns with 1 segment to go. Instructions to Adam not to push too hard in the last segment on the unfavoured yellow seemed to work as he hardly dropped it to leave Fylde 1 running out winners by 1½ laps from Young Guns with BST a further 3 laps down.

In the end a very close race between 3 teams & a very impressive debut by Adam who stole the day & some very merited plaudits.

All in all a great days racing & away for 5.30 with hopefully 26 racers going home having enjoyed a fun day’s racing.
