Fylde Area Round – 14 Feb 16
Race Report Blackpool 2016
17 racers turned out to contest the Fylde Area Round to make for a good day’s racing. It was good to see 2 returnees to area racing in Anthony Jennings & Matt Siddall who both demonstrated how well they can still drive.
In the 5 person Production race Barry Schofield took a 2 lap lead in the 1st segment. Dave Wood driving an unfamiliar car started slowly but then started to push in the middle of the race but a solid drive throughout by Barry meant Dave could only carve a lap back leaving Barry to take the win. Meanwhile Anthony & Paul Jennings had their own family battle for 3rd but a bad 3rd segment by Paul cost him the win to son Anthony.
Shep took tq in saloon from Martin Ellis. A rather erratic display from Martin in the A Final caused a few accidents but allowed Shep to win by 2 laps from David Sargent. Meanwhile a strong drive from Pete Clarkson in the B Final saw him just beat off Stephen Siddall to take 4th overall. Peter Donely romped away with the C Final to finish 8th while young Harry Shep took a very good victory by ½ lap from Dave Wood in the D.
F1 qualy produced a bit of drama. Peter Donely’s new pride & joy slipped a gear in less than a lap. A hasty fix meant it only travelled a few more feet to complete the same lap before the 1 min was up. His gear was properly fixed in the race warm up & he made an excellent recovery in the D final to finish 6th . However this was not enough to win the C. That honour went to Martin who finished 3rd overall before his very early departure from the meeting. Stephen comfortably won the B ahead of son Matt to finish 5th & 7th respectively. TQ Steve Sargent started the A Final safely on the most dangerous lane of yellow for F1. This allowed Shep to take a good 2 lap lead in the 1st segment. Steve then took most laps in the following 2 segments to take a small lead from Shep with David close behind. Pete’s car was wrongly placed in Steve’s lane for the start of the 4th segment which slowed Steve up awaiting a track call enough for David to move ahead & at much the same point Shep took a ride in the wrong lane & had to retire leaving David to take the win.
David continued his roll by taking TQ in Sports with a very fast 3.989. However in the A Final a track call did not come quick enough for a wrong laning wall shot to put an end to his challenge. Shep & Steve were side by side for the lead after segment 1. Steve sat out segment 2 but his 2nd run put him 1 lap ahead of Shep’s 2nd run. Shep was slowing in his last 2 segments & had a few offs but just managed to pip Pete Clarkson’s B final winning score. Shep sat out the last segment & with Gordon having also retired early with bearing problems only Stephen & Steve remained on track for the last segment. Stephen took 4th while Steve had an easy run in to take victory by 3 laps from Shep. Other noteable performances were Anthony & Matt in the B final who finished 5th & 6th respectively while Dave Wood’s very good win in the C produced 7th place.
It seemed apart from the usual car mishaps everyone had an enjoyable day’s friendly spirited racing.
With very few racers having 2 good scores to count in each class after 2 rounds everything is still to play for in the final round next month at North Wales.
