Castle Raceway Area Round – 8 Feb 15

Another good turnout of 18 racers, mostly crossing the border to North Wales, made the trip to Castle Raceway for the 2nd round of the Area 2 season.

Local drivers Dave Gatten & Terry Giacomet dominated Production separated by just a few feet but 18 laps ahead of top visitor Callum Wood.

The same 4 drivers made all 3 A Finals in the open classes & took the top 4 overall places in all 3 with David Sargent perhaps being the surprise (especially to himself!) in this group. The biggest surprise was that Shep did not win Saloon & F1. Martin Ellis drove a masterclass to beat him in Saloon by 6 laps. Having come last at the Blackpool round in F1 Martin decided he might as well win F1 at Castle Raceway to go with Saloon, this time by over 2 laps. I was trying to remember when Shep last didn’t win a class at an area round but not to worry, Martin decided to race a Gp12 in Sports for the 2nd round running leaving Paul a clear run at victory some 4 laps ahead of Gordon.

A lot of the closest racing took place in the B Finals. This was epitomised in Saloon with Ian Fitz, Pete Clarkson & myself taking the lead numerous times. I had just got ahead with about 20 secs to go when the button fell off my ECE controller (snapped screw) leaving me to wrestle with an unstopped spring & plunger to hold in place! This allowed Ian to go by & as the power went off Pete & I stopped on level footage with position decided on qualifying score!

On a less than easy circuit to drive on your 1st visit & especially when you are only 4, Harry Shepherd again stole the show in beating 5 racers in Sports in a frighteningly good display.

There is not a full copy of qualifying scores but the Finals results & championship positions are shown. Just another reminder, please let me know if you are not going to attend the Nationals if offered a place. The gap in the tables in each class denotes the current cut off point in allocated places although we may get more later.
