Timaru   31st October

23 racers including 7 home members arrived at the Timaru speedbowl  for the 3rd round of this year’s shortened S32 championship.  Some of the Luton contingent (led by Paul) had travelled down the day before for a night on the tiles in Margate(!).  Fortunately they were bailed in time and managed to make the meeting.

In the heats Paul and Dave Stevenson traded top spot until Dave put in a 44.09 to tq by just over a lap and broke his own lap record from a previous year’s S32 in the process.  There were several  first time visitors who got faster as the heats went on and of these Aston led the way making the C final.

Another first timer, Nick Lake, made the F final but his moment was to come in the team race.

Clubman class was led by home driver Graham Sampson who also made the overall final with a Genesis.

There were 3 Clubman finals with Nick L winning the first from another first time visitor, Ray George.

Keith Fishenden won the B final which was almost an all Timaru affair save for Tony Mills in 3rd place.

The A final saw Graham take the win from clubmates Andy, Mark and Bill.

In the overall finals it seemed that to win you had to be on white lane to win  as Stan, Andy, Dave Harvey and Dave Stevenson did just that.

The team race was run over 10 minute segments with 12 teams competing.  Considering how quick the compact Timaru track is there was only one tyre change and, amazingly, no gear changes or huge crashes.  The only casualty was Norfolk’s Hawk motor.  The reliability meant that there were some very close finishes with several teams less than a lap apart.  Winners though with 4 very quick runs were the ‘Nickers’ team of Nick L and Keith from WOW, where Dave H drove solo and in 3rd was Harwood Racing Marc and Paul.

Apologies for the late finish not helped by the odd glitch through the day.  Thanks to Crampton Museum for the use of the hall for the pits.

I hope you all enjoyed yourselves.  Take care until Corby.

Graham Sampson
