Round 9 Dowty   16 August

Dowty on Facebook

Dowty attracted 20 racers to their Southern 32.  Thanks to Dave, Rob and Phil for organising a very good meeting.

The 3 minute qualifying runs saw James Cleave take top spot on 25.42 from Rob Harris on 25.40.  Phil Mitchell was the fastest in Falcon Masters and third overall on 24.63.   The fastest Clubman qualifier was Mick Metcalfe on 22.04.

The Clubman B final was won by Cliff Bicknell by a narrow margin from Ian Howard with Alice Howard third.

The Clubman A final was won by Steve Rhodes ahead of a close race for second which was taken by Richard Hills from Mick Metcalfe with Terry Blackmore 4th .  That win puts Steve into the joint championship lead, tied on points with Mick.

Clubmans A final

Terry, Richard, Mick and Steve

The first Super Production / Falcon Masters final looked like a rerun of the Clubman B but produced a very different result with Graham Fryer winning from Ian and Alice Howard.

The D final again involved Richard Hills in a close race, this time for first which he took.

The C final saw Steve Rhodes take another win, this time beating overall championship leader Paul Harwood, while Mick Metcalfe was third with a motor that seemed to have lost its top speed.

Murray Tucker won the B from Stan Alton with their supers, ahead of Dave Coward’s rapid Falcon.

James Cleave won the A final after a close race with Rob Harris.  Phil Mitchell was a remarkable 3rd overall with his Falcon. Dowty’s long straights are hardly the place you expect a Falcon to be anywhere near a super!   Will Stemman was 4th, that  puts Will into the joint championship lead, tied on points with team mate Paul Harwood.

Le Mans 32 Team Race

Having seen what Phil Mitchell and Dave Coward could do with Falcon motors, we waited to see  how quick they would be with more power.  The answer was quick enough to win, although James Cleave and Will Stemman were faster up to quarter distance.  Stan Alton’s very fast final segment elevated Luton to second just a lap ahead of Harwood racing.  The Luton Layabouts were fourth ahead of GT.  Oaklands went into the final segment on the same lap as GT, but hit trouble before the end, leaving them just ahead of Gumboslot.   Church Farm ,the only Falcon powered runners, took 8th ahead of the Howard family WGPE (Woodyard Grand Prix Engineering) team.

Second place puts Luton closer to Harwood racing in the championship, it looks like the title will be decided between those two.

We now look forward to the next round at Timaru in September.
